In brief
Written by Twana Benoit and directed by her son, Josiah Price, The Juneteenth Story began decades ago as a family telling of how freedom came to be. Staged in Lafayette since 2022, most years at the Acadiana Center for the Arts, it gathers a community each June to remember, celebrate, and sit together in the meaning of the day.
Told across two timelines, it connects emancipation-era experience to the ongoing work of freedom now. It is theatre that does what a holiday should: it brings a community into one room.
